Q.What is the most photographed frog on the planet?
A. The very sexy Red-eyed Tree Frog, Agalychnis callidryas.
The SAVE THE FROGS! Eco-tour to Belize has taken off to a great start! The rains have come and the frogs are out! This evening we encountered 9 species of frogs and toads. By far the most beautiful of frog species we observed this evening was the Red-eyed Tree Frog, Agalychnis callidryas.
It is the rainy season in Belize and many species of amphibians are on the hunt for a mate. Male frogs sing to attract a female. That’s right: Frog sex is all around us!
Besides the gorgeous Red-eyed Tree Frogs, we also witnessed a pair of Mexican Tree Frogs, Smilisca baudinii, calling from a large puddle.
Even the toads were calling! This Gulf Coast Toad, Incilius valliceps, was found on the trail. What a great looking toad!
Also at the pond we observed a large Morelet’s crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii. These mellow crocodiles do not pose any danger to people, but we both kept our distance from each other. Respect for my scaly brothers!
Considering this is the first night, we know it’s going to be a great Eco-tour!
