…but don’t let me convince you. Cows are not only cool, but they’re clearly cuddly and cute! This past weekend I had the splendid opportunity to attend Farm Sanctuary’s Hoe Down. Besides the good food and brews, Hoe Down guests were invited to meet the wonderful animals that call Farm Sanctuary home. Hint: they’re big, furry, and give good kisses.
If they’re not cuddling with each other, then they will find a nice human to exploit for a good scratch. Did you know that cows are highly social creatures that establish life long bonds with their family and friends? Well they do! The two pictured above look like brothers, but are actually just really good friends. Many of these cows were rescued from factory farms and now live a life of peace at Farm Sanctuary.
Seriously. They love a good scratch. This cow could barely stand straight as we gave him some tender affection.
See the wrinkles? Those are wrinkles of joy.
Ok, so here’s the problem: Our society is not very cow friendly. Whether it’s beef or dairy, cows around the world are exploited and treated in the most horrible of ways. I could write a novel about the horrendous abuse that occur every day to cows, but Dr. Jane Goodall explains it perfectly: “Farm animals are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined and, despite having been bred as domestic slaves, they are individual beings in their own right. As such, they deserve our respect. And our help. Who will plead for them if we are silent? Thousands of people who say they ‘love’ animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been treated so with little respect and kindness just to make more meat.” Do you think you love animals? Think about that question.
As we headed back home we passed the unfortunate reality of what cows face everyday. Another slave ship headed to a slaughterhouse. We snapped some photos and reflected on the moment. Why take photos?
…because you never know who is looking back at you, silent, but hoping you will help. You know what’s great? You can help. Back to Dr. Jane, “The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Kick the cruelty, ditch the beef, and realize that cows are pretty freakin’ cool.
