Pampering Peccaries

IMG_6492 2

Lexxi is a collared peccary, arguably one of the most dangerous animals in the Belizean rainforest. There are few animals I would wish to not meet in the forest, but the peccary is one of them. Moving in large herds, these intelligent members of the pig family are quick to aggressively defend their family from any potential threat. They are potentially very dangerous animals indeed! However, Lexxi is still young and has not yet discovered her true nature. Peccaries are amazing animals and I have an affinity for them…. perhaps because I care deeply for pigs. Intelligent, social, good lookin’… what’s not to like? This poor girl was rejected by her mother and was discovered on the edge of death. Now in great condition and growing fast, we hope to integrate her with other peccaries and eventually she will be released into the wild. She is not a pet, and should never be thought as one, but she certainly craves attention and comfort.

“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France
